The history of Mid-Autumn Festival Singapore 2024
Mid-Autumn Festival (the 15th of the 8th Lunar month), is also known as Mooncake Festival because of its custom of eating mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn celebration. originating from East Asia. The traditions of Mid-Autumn Festival is believed to have originated from East Asia, but have also spread to other parts of Asia over time, and is now celebrated amongst the South East Asian Chinese communities.
The mooncake is said to symbolise the full moon, which associates with reunion, harmony, and prosperity. It also marks the occasion’s significance for families to reunite and celebrate the harvest moon. Mooncakes are traditionally round pastries filled with lotus seed paste, red bean paste, or egg yolk. However, today’s modern adaptations of mooncakes come in snow skin and ice-cream variations with chocolate, truffle, mango and even durian fillings, etc.

19 Aug (Mon) to 17 Sep 2024 (Tues) | Outside People’s Park Complex | 10am to 10pm – The Mid-Autumn Festival Singapore 2024 kickstarts with a cultural carnival offering you and your loved ones a fun-filled day packed with activities and entertainment. Indulge in customary food, traditional art and gifts from the offerings by various vendors assembled in this bustling contemporary city center.
14 Sep 2024 | Start: Chinatown Point, End: Kreta Ayer Square | 7pm – Enjoy a guided mass lantern walk under the full moonlight and get captivated by the grand street lantern displays alongside lantern enthusiasts carrying their personal decorated creations.
Paper Lantern Art Contests
25 Aug 2024 (Sun) | Chinatown Point, Level 1 | 9am to 2pm -It’s a showdown for art and lantern aficionados in this traditional craft battle! Watch as artists compete one another in their lantern painting prowess and be part of the cheering crowd to witness who emerges the winner!
Chinatown Street Light-Up Inauguration
30 Aug 2024 (Fri) | Kreta Ayer Square | 6pm – Marvel with delight at the opening ceremony of Chinatown Street Light-up as Officials assemble to grace and launch the event.
2nd Oct 2024 (Wed) | New Bridge Road, South Bridge Road, Eu Tong Sen Street, Upper Cross Street | 7pm to 12 midnight – Take a stroll down or cruise your drive along these lantern-lit streets for a nighttime luminescent experience.
Literary Performances (Weekend)
7 Sep (Sat) & 8 Sep (Sun) | Kreta Ayer Square | 7pm to 9pm – Enjoy a weekend of captivating evening shows by performers of Chinese traditional arts. Immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of the Mid-Autumn Festival as talented artists entertain you under the night sky of the lunar splendour.
