Appearance of Hardwood Flooring
Many still find it hard to differentiate between hardwood and softwood flooring. In general, the hardwood group is more distinctive in terms of appearance and characteristics. Hardwood is generally more appealing in the aspects of grains, patterns and colours. They are more durable than softwood due to their intricate structure and is more porous but higher in density.
Origin of Hardwood
Hardwood comes from angiosperm trees, or flowering trees, that produces broad leaves. While these trees are deciduous (shedding of leaves) by nature, they are evergreen and hardly ever seen with yellowing or drying out due to the humid climate in which they are located. These hardwood trees are found in the tropical and subtropical areas such as Asia & Southeast Asia, northern Latin America and Central Africa.
Cost of Hardwood Flooring
Because of its robustness, and are more difficult to work with, hardwood is relatively more expensive than softwood. Another reason for its high cost is due to tropical hardwood scarcity, such as merbau, iroko, ebony, sapele, keruing, wenge, mahagony and teak are threatened endangered species.
Hardwood flooring is available in solid planks or boards. These wood strips come in different widths and lengths. They also come in blocks that can be positioned together in creating different patterns of a parquet floor. Furniture makers also use hardwood in the form of veneers to cover edges, bases and line softwood carcasses, such as cabinets and wardrobes.
